Herod and his soldiers mocked Jesus and made fun of him. They dressed him in a fancy robe and then sent him back to Pilate.

The God of our fathers—of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—has done this, to bring glory to his servant Jesus. But you handed Jesus over to be killed. You spoke against him when he was in Pilate’s court, even though Pilate had decided to let him go.

Then some began to spit on him. They blindfolded him, hit him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” Then the guards took him and beat him.

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples what would happen to him. He told them he would have to go to Jerusalem and that the elders, chief priests, and teachers of the law would make him suffer many things there. He would be killed, but he would rise again on the third day.

Long ago God planned that Jesus would be handed over to you. With the help of those who didn’t know God’s law, and under the plan God spoke long ago, you put him to death by nailing him to a cross.

“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?”

“He’s a criminal,” they answered. “If he weren’t, we wouldn’t have handed him over to you.”

When Jesus responded this way, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is that any way to answer the high priest?” he demanded.

The people stood there watching. The rulers even mocked Jesus, saying, “He saved others, let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”

Then the whole group got up and led Jesus off to Pilate.

They tied him up, took him away, and turned him over to Pilate, the governor.

Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning. The Jewish leaders didn’t enter the palace, because they didn’t want to be made unclean. They wanted to be able to eat the Passover meal. So

Very early in the morning, the chief priests agreed on a verdict with the elders, the teachers of the law, and the whole Sanhedrin. They tied Jesus up, took him away, and turned him over to Pilate.

The rest grabbed his slaves, treated them badly, and killed them.

This happened so that what Jesus had said about how he was going to die would come true.
