So don’t judge anything before the appointed time. Wait until the Lord returns, and he will bring what’s now hidden in the dark out into the light. He’ll show the real reasons why people do what they do. At that time God will give each person the praise they deserve.

God knows the human heart, and he showed that he accepted the Gentiles by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.

Then the Lord told him, “You Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and evil.

But the man wanted to prove himself right, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I’m the one who searches hearts and minds and that I pay each person back for what they’ve done.

In the same way, you who are younger should follow the lead of your elders. All of you should have a humble attitude toward one another, because Scripture says, “God opposes those who are proud, but he gives grace to those who are humble.”

So no one can obey the law well enough to be considered right with God. Instead, the law makes us more aware of our sin.

He didn’t need anyone to tell him what people are like, because he already knew what’s inside of a person.

“Everything they do is for others to see. People sometimes wear little boxes on their foreheads and arms that hold Scripture quotes. But they make their boxes big and obvious. People put tassels on the four corners of their clothes to remind them to obey God’s commands. But they make their tassels extra long.

“I have obeyed all those commandments since I was a boy,” the ruler said.

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed, ‘God, I thank you that I’m not like other people—not like robbers, or people who do other evil things, or those who commit adultery, or even like this tax collector.

(Judas later felt very guilty for betraying Jesus. He bought a field with the payment he’d received, and he dove headfirst into that field from a height. His body burst open and all his insides spilled out.

But they cheat widows out of their houses and say long prayers to show off. God will punish them severely.”

The religious leaders sent spies to keep a close watch on Jesus. The spies pretended to be sincere, but they were hoping that they could trap Jesus in something he said. Then they could hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.

“When you go without eating, don’t look all sad like the hypocrites. They make strange faces so that people will notice that they’re fasting. Truly I tell you, that’s all the reward they’ll get.

“When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that other people will see them. Truly I tell you, that’s all the reward they’ll get.

“When you give to people in need, don’t announce it by having trumpets blown in front of you. That’s what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets because they want people to notice them. Truly I tell you, that’s all the reward they’ll get.

Jesus said to him a third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” It made Peter sad that Jesus had asked him a third time, “Do you love me?” He answered, “Lord, you know all things. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

Jesus told a story to some people who were sure they were right with God and looked down on everyone else.

“I tell you, the tax collector went home accepted by God, but the Pharisee didn’t. All those who lift themselves up will be humbled, but those who humble themselves will be lifted up.”

The believers prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart.

God, who looks into our hearts, knows the mind of the Spirit, and the Spirit prays for God’s people just as God wants him to pray.
