“Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and throw stones to kill those who are sent to you. Many times I’ve wanted to gather your people together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would not let me.

Was there ever a prophet your people didn’t attack? They even killed those who told about the coming of the Blameless One. And now you’ve handed him over to his enemies and murdered him.

Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, don’t weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.

Because you didn’t recognize the time when God came to you, your enemies will smash you to the ground. They will destroy you and all the people inside your walls, and they won’t leave one stone on top of another.”

The rest grabbed his slaves, treated them badly, and killed them.

He sent his slaves to the guests he’d invited to tell them to come, but they refused.

Their bodies will lie in the main street of the great city where their Lord was nailed to a cross. That city is sometimes compared to Sodom and Egypt.

Saul had agreed that Stephen should die. On that day an attack began against the church in Jerusalem. The believers, except for the apostles, were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

While they were all throwing stones at Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him.
