During that time, when a crowd of so many thousands had gathered that the people were stepping on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples. He said, “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. They just pretend to be godly.

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s wishes. From the beginning, the devil has been a murderer. He has never obeyed the truth because there’s no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

So they asked him, “Then what sign will you give us so we can see it and believe you?

Then the Jewish leaders asked him, “What sign can you show us to prove that you have the right to do this?”

People have been spilling the blood of prophets since the world began, but this generation will be held responsible for all of it—from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the temple. Yes, I tell you, the people of today will be held responsible for all of it.

“You unbelieving people who’ve turned away from God!” Jesus replied. “How long do I have to stay with you and put up with you?” Then he said to the man, “Bring your son here.”

If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to be baptized, John said to them, “You little snakes! Who warned you to try to escape the punishment that’s coming?
