Jesus told them, “You try to make yourselves look good in the eyes of other people, but God knows your hearts. There are things that people value highly that God can’t stand.

We know that no one who relies on the law is made right with God, because “the one who is right with God will live by faith.”

Did he become right with God because of something he did? If so, he could brag about that (though he couldn’t brag to God).

They didn’t know how God makes people right with himself, so they tried to get right with God in their own way. They didn’t realize that

“Which of the three,” Jesus asked, “do you think was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by the robbers?”

So you see that a person is considered right with God because of the action they take, not just because they believe.

Jesus called the crowd to him, along with his disciples, and he said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple has to deny themselves, pick up their cross, and follow me.
