A certain ruler asked Jesus, “Good teacher, what must I do to receive eternal life?”

If the benefits of this agreement depended on the law, then they would no longer depend on the promise. But God gave them to Abraham as a free gift through a promise.

But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they hadn’t been baptized by John.

As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and got down on his knees in front of him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to receive eternal life?”

One of the teachers of the law had been listening to the discussion and he realized that Jesus had given a good answer. So he came up and asked him, “Which is the most important of all the commandments?”

I tell you, many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, but they didn’t see it. They wanted to hear what you hear, but they didn’t hear it.”

“What is written in the Law?” Jesus answered. “How do you understand it?”

They were trying to trap Jesus with that question, so they’d have a reason to bring charges against him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.

“What did Moses command you?” he replied.
