Then the Pharisees replied, “Your parents were living in sin when you were born! You know what that makes you. So how dare you talk to us like that?” And they threw him out of the synagogue.

His parents said that because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who had already decided that anyone who said Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.

His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, was this man born blind because he sinned, or was it because his parents sinned?”

Truly I tell you, anyone who doesn’t receive God’s kingdom like a little child will never enter it.”

No one could buy or sell anything unless they had the mark, which was the name of the beast or the number of its name.

I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be the first in everything, wouldn’t acknowledge me.

In the same way, you who are younger should follow the lead of your elders. All of you should have a humble attitude toward one another, because Scripture says, “God opposes those who are proud, but he gives grace to those who are humble.”

At one time we all lived among those things. We followed our wrong desires and thoughts, and we tried to satisfy what they wanted us to do. God was angry with us, as he was with everyone else, because of the kind of people we all were.

“We grew up as Jews. We’re not sinful Gentiles.

God will judge those outside. But as for those inside, as Scripture says, “Throw out that person who’s doing wrong!”

Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and they asked, “What? Are we blind too?”

Jesus heard that the Pharisees had thrown the man out. So he went and found him and asked him, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

You’re doing what your own father does.” “We know who our father is,” they insisted. “The only Father we have is God himself.”

Everyone the Father gives me will come to me, and I’ll never turn any of them away.

All who lift themselves up will be humbled, but those who humble themselves will be lifted up.”

An expert in the law said to Jesus, “Teacher, when you say things like that, you’re insulting us too.”

Blessed are you when people hate you, when they have nothing to do with you, when they say bad things about you, and when they treat your name as evil because of the Son of Man.

So when I come, I’ll show everyone what he’s doing. He’s saying malicious things about us that aren’t true. And as if that weren’t bad enough, he’s also refusing to welcome other believers, and he’s keeping others from doing so. In fact, if anyone does welcome them, he’s throwing them out of the church.
