John 9:24

The Pharisees called back in the man who’d been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth!” they said. “We know that man is a sinner.”

Some of the Pharisees said, “This Jesus is not from God, because he doesn’t keep the Sabbath day.” But others asked, “How could a sinner do such signs?” So the Pharisees were divided.

As soon as the chief priests and officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. I haven’t found any basis for a charge against him myself.”

He never sinned, but God made him become sin for us, so that in him we could be made right with God.

God did what the written law was not able to do, since it was weakened by our sinful desires. God sent his Son to be an offering for sin. He sent him in human form like those who are susceptible to sin. When God did this, he passed judgment against sin so that it could no longer control people through their wrong desires.

“He’s a criminal,” they answered. “If he weren’t, we wouldn’t have handed him over to you.”

You’re going to be thrown out of the synagogue. In fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they’re serving God.

I won’t say much more to you, because the prince of this world is coming. He has no power over me,

“I’m not controlled by a demon,” Jesus replied. “I honor my Father, but you don’t honor me.

Can any of you prove that I’m guilty of sin? If I’m telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?

so that all people will honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever doesn’t honor the Son doesn’t honor the Father who sent him.

When all the people saw this, they began to whisper among themselves, “Jesus has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

the Pharisees and the teachers of the law started muttering, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

The Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this. He said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him—what kind of woman she is. She’s a sinner!”

Two men who had rebelled against Rome were crucified with him, one on his right and the other on his left.

“I don’t know if he’s a sinner or not,” he replied, “but I do know one thing. I used to be blind, and now I can see!”

At that same time there was a powerful earthquake, and a tenth of the city collapsed. In the earthquake, 7,000 people were killed. Those who lived through it were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
