Don’t you know that when you agree to obey someone the way a slave would, you become a slave to that person? If you’re slaves of sin, then you will die. But if you’re slaves who obey God, then you’ll live a godly life.

They promise to give them freedom, but they themselves are slaves to depravity. That’s because “people are slaves to anything that controls them.”

So don’t let sin rule over your mortal body and make you follow its wrong desires.

We know that our old self was nailed to the cross with him. That happened so that our bodies that were so used to sinning wouldn’t control us anymore. Now we’re not slaves of sin any longer.

At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived, and controlled by all kinds of wrong desires and pleasures. We were hostile and envious. Other people hated us, and we hated them.

Thanks be to God, who saves me through Jesus Christ our Lord. So in my mind, I’m a slave to God’s law. But if I follow my sinful desires, then I’m a slave to the law of sin.
