“Who are you?” they asked. “Just what I’ve been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied.
Jesus spoke to the people again and said, “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in darkness. They will have the light of life.”
“If you are the Messiah,” they began, “tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me.
He went back inside the palace and asked Jesus, “Where do you come from?” But Jesus didn’t answer him.
They asked one last time, “Then who are you? Give us an answer to take back to the people who sent us. Who do you say you are?”
The Jewish leaders surrounded him and demanded, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you’re the Messiah, come right out and say so.”
When the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask John who he was,
I told you that you would die in your sins. If you don’t believe that I am, you will certainly die in your sins.”
“I have much to say in judgment of you. But the one who sent me is trustworthy, and I’m telling the world what I’ve heard from him.”
