“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.

You’ll look for me, but you won’t find me. You can’t come where I am going.”

The person who doesn’t have the Spirit doesn’t accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. Those things seem foolish to them, and they can’t understand them, because they can’t be understood without the Spirit’s help.

The crowd spoke up and asked, “The Law tells us that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”

Many of Jesus’ disciples said when they heard this, “This is an unpleasant message. Who can accept it?”

Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, asking, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

Then the Jews there began to complain about Jesus because he’d said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”

“How can someone be born when they’re old?” Nicodemus asked. “They can’t go back inside their mother and be born a second time!”

Once more Jesus said to them, “I’m going away. You will look for me, and you will die in your sin. You can’t come where I’m going.”

“My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I am telling you now: You can’t come where I’m going.
