After he said that, the Jewish leaders wanted even more to kill him, because he wasn’t just breaking the law for the Sabbath day. He was calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

“We’re not going to throw stones at you for any good work,” they answered. “We’re going to stone you because you claim to be God when you’re only a man.”

Didn’t Moses give you the law? But not one of you obeys the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”

After this, Jesus traveled around in Galilee. He didn’t want to travel around in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him.

Because Jesus was doing things like this on the Sabbath day, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him.

Jesus answered, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I’ve been with you for so long? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. So how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Or haven’t you read in the Law how the priests in the temple do their regular work even on the Sabbath day, but they aren’t considered guilty?

When the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask John who he was,

The man went away and told the Jewish leaders it was Jesus who had made him well.

Jesus said in his own defense, “My Father is always at work right up to this day, and I am working too.”
