Remember what I told you: ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If people have hated me and tried to hurt me, they will do the same to you. If they have obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours too.

They tried again to arrest him, but he escaped from them.

At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they’re trying to kill?

The man who’d been healed had no idea who it was, because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law got very angry. They began to talk to one another about what they could do to Jesus.

But the Pharisees went out and began to make plans with the Herodians to kill Jesus.

Then Jesus said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and it became as good as new, just as strong as the other hand.

When the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask John who he was,

so the Jewish leaders said to the man who’d been healed, “It’s the Sabbath day. The law doesn’t allow you to carry your mat today.”

The man went away and told the Jewish leaders it was Jesus who had made him well.

Jesus said in his own defense, “My Father is always at work right up to this day, and I am working too.”

After he said that, the Jewish leaders wanted even more to kill him, because he wasn’t just breaking the law for the Sabbath day. He was calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

Jesus said to them, “I did a single miracle, and you’re all amazed.
