So she ran to Simon Peter and another disciple, the one Jesus loved. She told them, “They’ve taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they’ve put him!”

The disciple Jesus loved was next to him at the table.

They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They’ve taken my Lord away, and I don’t know where they’ve put him,”

This is the disciple who is a witness about these things. He has written them down, and we know that what he says is true.

Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Simon Peter, “It’s the Lord!” As soon as Peter heard that, he put his shirt back on (he’d taken it off to work) and jumped into the water.

When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, this is your son.”

Peter turned around and saw that the disciple Jesus loved was following them. (He was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and asked, “Lord, who is going to hand you over to your enemies?”)

He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?” She thought he was the gardener, so she said, “Sir, if you’ve carried him away, tell me where you’ve put him, and I’ll go get him.”

Until then they hadn’t understood from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.
