Then Pilate went back inside the palace and ordered Jesus to be brought to him. Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

So don’t be afraid in any way of those who oppose you. Your fearlessness will show them that they’re going to be destroyed but you’re going to be saved.

Jesus answered, “Even if I am a witness about myself, what I say is valid. I know where I came from and where I’m going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I’m going.

But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, “Tell us, under oath to the living God, whether you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”

“So you’re a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I’m a king. The reason I was born and came into the world was to be a witness to the truth. Everyone who is on the side of truth listens to me.”

The governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the palace, which was called the Praetorium, and there they gathered all the other soldiers around him.

Herod asked Jesus many questions, but he gave no answer.

Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning. The Jewish leaders didn’t enter the palace, because they didn’t want to be made unclean. They wanted to be able to eat the Passover meal. So

“Are you concerned about that yourself?” Jesus asked. “Or is that what others have been telling you about me?”

When Pilate heard that, he was even more afraid.

“Are you refusing to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you understand? I have the power to set you free or to nail you to a cross.”
