Truly I tell you, you’re going to weep and mourn while the world is full of joy. You’ll be sad, but your sadness will turn into joy.

My brothers and sisters, think of it as pure joy when you face all kinds of trouble.

Blessed are those who mourn, because they will be comforted.

We’re often distressed, but we’re always full of joy. We’re poor, but we make many people rich. We own nothing, but we never lack anything.

Instead, you’re filled with sadness because I’ve said these things.

Peter went outside and he broke down and cried.

When he got up from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them sleeping, because they were worn out with sorrow.

Blessed are you who are hungry now, because you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who mourn now, because you will laugh.

Right then the rooster crowed for a second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had told him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you’ll say three times that you don’t know me.” And he broke down and cried.

And you imitated both us and the Lord Jesus, because even in the midst of terrible suffering, you welcomed our message with the joy that the Holy Spirit gives.

Then he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

“But when the renters saw the son coming, they said to one another, ‘He’s supposed to inherit all the owner’s property someday. Come on, let’s kill him, and then everything will be ours.’
