My brothers and sisters, don’t be surprised if the world hates you.

The people of the world can’t hate you, but they hate me because I’m a witness that what they’re doing is wrong.

Everyone who does wrong hates the light and doesn’t come into the light, because they’re afraid that what they’re doing will get them in trouble.

Everyone will hate you because of me. But the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Blessed are you when people hate you, when they have nothing to do with you, when they say bad things about you, and when they treat your name as evil because of the Son of Man.

Everyone will hate you because of me. But anyone who stands firm to the end will be saved.

See what great love the Father has given us: We’re even called children of God! And that’s what we really are. The world doesn’t know us, because it didn’t know him.

“Blessed are you when, because of me, people insult you and attack you and falsely accuse you of doing all kinds of bad things.

You unfaithful people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Anyone who chooses to be the world’s friend becomes God’s enemy.

And let’s keep looking to Jesus. He’s the one who leads us into faith and the one who makes our faith mature. Because of the joy he was looking forward to, he didn’t let the shame of being put to death on a cross stop him. He suffered on the cross, and then he sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

All who hope to be like him make themselves pure the way Christ is pure.

“Then people will hand you over to be oppressed and killed, and all nations will hate you because of me.

“I’ve told you all this so that you won’t turn away from the truth.

“I’ve told you these things so that you can have peace because of me. In this world you’re going to have trouble. But be encouraged! I’ve already defeated the world.”

There they strengthened the disciples, encouraging them to remain faithful to what they’d been taught. “We have to go through many hard times to enter the kingdom of God,” they explained.
