“Why wasn’t this perfume sold so that the money could be given to the poor? It was worth a year’s pay!”

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You are still missing one thing. Sell everything you have, give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.”

So sell what you own and give to the poor. That will be like putting your money in a bag that will never wear out. Store up your riches in heaven, where they can never be used up, where no thief can get near them and no moth can destroy them.

Philip answered, “We’d have to spend more than half a year’s pay to buy enough bread for each person to have just a bite!”

“You look at the bit of sawdust in your friend’s eye, but you pay no attention to the chunk of wood in your own eye.

He agreed to give them the usual pay for a day’s work, and he sent them into the vineyard.

“But then that servant went out and found another servant, who owed him 100 silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.

But one of the disciples, Judas Iscariot, who would later hand Jesus over to his enemies, complained about what Mary did. He asked,

But he didn’t say that because he cared about the poor. He said it because he was a thief. Judas was in charge of the moneybag, and he used to help himself to what was in it.

Judas was in charge of the money, some of the disciples thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast. Others thought Jesus was talking about giving something to the poor.
