So then he came right out and told them, “Lazarus is dead.
Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you’re speaking plainly and not using images and stories.
“I’ve been telling you things using images and stories. But a time is coming when I won’t use examples; I’ll tell you plainly about my Father.
The Jewish leaders surrounded him and demanded, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you’re the Messiah, come right out and say so.”
He explained all this clearly. But Peter took him to one side and started to berate him.
Jesus had meant that Lazarus was dead, but his disciples thought he’d meant that Lazarus had actually fallen asleep.
For your sake, I’m glad I wasn’t there, because now you’ll believe. Let’s go to him.”
