A man named Lazarus was sick. He was in Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.

The crowd that had been with Jesus when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to tell everyone about what had happened.

Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there in Bethany. They came out not just to see him but also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead.

After he’d said that, Jesus told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I’m going there to wake him up.”

Then Jesus left them and went out of the city to spend the night in Bethany.

About that time she became sick and died. Her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room.

So the sisters sent a message to Jesus. “Lord,” they told him, “the one you love is sick.”

As they all approached Jerusalem, they came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent out two of his disciples,

Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,

and many Jews had come out to comfort Martha and Mary on the loss of their brother.
