“I’ve been telling you things using images and stories. But a time is coming when I won’t use examples; I’ll tell you plainly about my Father.

“Do you understand all these things?” Jesus asked. “Yes,” they replied.

We also know that the Son of God has come and given us understanding so that we can know the God who is true. And we are in the true God by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

The person who doesn’t have the Spirit doesn’t accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. Those things seem foolish to them, and they can’t understand them, because they can’t be understood without the Spirit’s help.

Why can’t you understand what I’m saying? Because you can’t really hear it.

They didn’t understand that Jesus was telling them about his Father.

What did he mean when he said, ‘You’ll look for me, but you won’t find me,’ and ‘You can’t come where I am going’?”

Many of Jesus’ disciples said when they heard this, “This is an unpleasant message. Who can accept it?”

Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, asking, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

Jesus taught the crowd all these things by telling stories. He didn’t say anything to them without using a story.

He didn’t teach them anything without using a story. But when he was alone with his disciples, he explained everything to them.

Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you’re speaking plainly and not using images and stories.

What the proverbs say is true about them: “A dog returns to where it has thrown up” and “a pig that is washed goes back to rolling in the mud.”
