In the same way, Christ didn’t claim for himself the privilege of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son, today I have become your Father.”

Jesus answered, “If I bring glory to myself, my glory means nothing. My Father is the one who brings glory to me, and you claim him as your God.

After all, God never said to any of the angels, “You are my Son, today I have become your Father.” Or, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son.”

Whoever speaks on their own does it to get personal glory, but anyone who works for the glory of the one who sent him can be trusted. There’s nothing dishonest about him.

and he has now kept them for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. This is what is written in the second Psalm: “ ‘You are my son; today I have become your father.’

God did what the written law was not able to do, since it was weakened by our sinful desires. God sent his Son to be an offering for sin. He sent him in human form like those who are susceptible to sin. When God did this, he passed judgment against sin so that it could no longer control people through their wrong desires.

In the past, God spoke to our people a little at a time in different ways through the prophets.

God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son so that anyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.

So he had to be made like them—fully human in every way. That way he could serve God as a merciful and faithful high priest and purify the people from their sins.

Holy brothers and sisters, who take part in God’s calling, I want you to focus your attention on Jesus, who is the messenger and high priest of our faith.

God appointed him to be a high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
