Give her as much pain and suffering as she gave glory and wealth to herself. She brags in her heart, ‘I rule on a throne like a queen. I’m not a widow; I’ll never mourn.’

Once you weren’t a people, but now you are the people of God. Once you hadn’t received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

You’ve lived in luxury on earth and had everything you wanted. But you’ve only made yourselves fat like cattle to be butchered.

Human anger doesn’t produce the holy life God wants.

Some were killed with stones, some were sawed in two, and some were killed by swords. They went around wearing the skins of sheep and goats. They were poor, systematically oppressed, and mistreated.

Remember those earlier days after you received the light. You remained strong in a great struggle even though you suffered greatly.

So there must still be a Sabbath rest available for God’s people.

So don’t be ashamed of the message about our Lord, and don’t be ashamed of me, his prisoner. Instead, join with me as I suffer for the good news. God’s power will help us do that.

I’m joyful because of what I’m suffering for you. My suffering continues the sufferings of Christ for his body, which is the church.

We’re full of joy because we expect to share in God’s glory. And that’s not all. We’re full of joy even when we suffer.

“But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received good things, while Lazarus received bad things. Now he is comforted here while you are in terrible pain.

But because they have no roots, they last only a short time. When trouble or suffering comes because of the message, they quickly fall away from the faith.

I’ve seen my people being beaten down in Egypt. I’ve heard their groans and I’ve come to set them free. Now go, I’m sending you back to Egypt.’
