Galatians 5:1

Christ has set us free so that we can be free. So stand firm, and don’t let anyone make you a slave again.

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

My brothers and sisters, you were called to be free. But don’t use your freedom as an excuse to live under the power of sin. Instead, serve one another humbly in love.

Live as free people, but don’t use your freedom to cover up evil. Live as people who are God’s slaves.

Sin won’t control you anymore, because you’re not ruled by the law, you’re ruled by God’s grace.

The law of the Spirit who gives life through Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.

But now you do know God. Even better, God knows you. So why are you turning back to those weak and worthless powers? Do you want to be slaves to them all over again?

Let’s hold firmly to the hope we say we have, because the one who promised is faithful.

That question came up because some false believers had slipped in among us to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus. They wanted to make us slaves again.

Brothers and sisters, we’re not children of the slave woman. We’re children of the free woman.

So remember what you’ve been taught and what you’ve heard. Hold firmly to it and turn away from your sins. If you don’t wake up, I’ll come like a thief, and you won’t know when I’m coming to you.

They promise to give them freedom, but they themselves are slaves to depravity. That’s because “people are slaves to anything that controls them.”

Be on your guard, remain strong in the faith, be brave,

But now we have died to what used to control us, and we have been set free from the law. We serve in the new way of the Holy Spirit, not in the old way of the written law.

You’ve been set free from sin and have become slaves to living in the right way.

Now then, why are you trying to test God by putting a heavy load on the shoulders of the Gentiles? Our people of long ago couldn’t carry that load, and we today can’t either.

Someone who was a slave when the Lord called them is now serving the Lord as a free person. But it’s just as true that someone who was free when God called them is now a slave of Christ.

Dear friends, I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share. But I felt that I had to write and urge you to stand up for the faith that God’s holy people have been trusted with once and for all time.

But no matter what happens, live in a way that brings honor to the good news about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you, I’ll know that you’re standing firm together in the one Spirit and that you’re fighting together as a unit to defend the good news.

So stand firm, buckle the belt of truth around your waist, put the armor of godliness on your chest,

I’m not asking you to do anything else except to hold on to what you have until I come.

Because we have a great high priest who has gone up into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let’s hold on firmly to our faith.

We have come to share in Christ, but we need to maintain right to the end the confidence we started with.

But Christ is faithful over God’s house as his Son. And we are his house, if we hold tightly to our courage and the hope we boast about.

Brothers and sisters, remain strong in the faith. Hold on to what we’ve taught you in person and in our letters.

Now we really live, because you’re standing firm in the Lord.

But the heavenly Jerusalem is free, and she is our mother.

But now that this faith has come, the law is no longer in charge of us.

My dear brothers and sisters, remain strong in the faith. Don’t let anything move you. Always give yourselves completely to the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord, your work isn’t for nothing.

They tie up heavy, bulky loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they aren’t willing to lift a finger themselves to help.

But if the husband dies, then the law doesn’t consider her to be married to him anymore. If a woman sleeps with another man while her husband is alive, the law says that she has committed adultery. But if her husband dies, then she’s free from that law, and she’s not guilty of adultery if she marries another man.

The Spirit you received doesn’t make you slaves who live in fear again. Instead, the Spirit you received has made you God’s genuine child by adoption. And the Spirit leads us to call out to God, “Abba, Father.”

In fact, you even put up with anyone who makes you a slave or uses you or takes advantage of you. You put up with those who claim to be better than you, and even with those who slap you in the face.

No, new wine has to be poured into new wineskins.
