They traveled across the whole island of Cyprus until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish man named Bar-Jesus. He was an evil magician and a false prophet.

Some time ago a man named Theudas appeared and made great claims about himself. He got about 400 people to support him, but he was killed, his followers were scattered, and it all came to nothing.

Whoever speaks on their own does it to get personal glory, but anyone who works for the glory of the one who sent him can be trusted. There’s nothing dishonest about him.

They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his evil magic.

Outside the city are those who are impure, those who practice witchcraft, those who commit sexual sins and murder, those who worship idols, and everyone who loves and does what is false.

They speak empty, bragging words. By appealing to lust and desire, they tempt new believers who are just escaping from others who are living wrong.

They’ll pretend that they’re serving God, but they won’t believe that God has any power. Don’t have anything to do with people like that.

People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, braggers, proud, abusive, and disobedient to their parents. They won’t be thankful or holy,

He’ll oppose everything that’s called God or is worshiped, and he’ll give himself power over everything. He’ll set himself up in God’s temple and announce that he’s God himself.

The evil magician, who was also called Elymas (meaning “Sorcerer”), opposed them and tried to keep the governor from becoming a believer.
