Acts 6:5

Radiate New Testament

This plan pleased everyone. They chose Stephen, a man who was full of faith and of the Holy Spirit. They also chose Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, who was a convert to the Jewish faith.

The next day we left and arrived at Caesarea. There we stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven deacons.

Stephen was filled with God’s grace and power. He did great wonders and signs among the people.

Then the high priest questioned Stephen. He asked, “Are these charges true?”

Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are wise and filled with the Holy Spirit. We’ll turn this important work over to them.

In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers. Among them were Barnabas, Simeon (also called Niger), Lucius from Cyrene, and Manaen, who’d been brought up with Herod, the ruler of Galilee. Saul was among them too.

Some of the believers who’d been scattered by the attacks that started after Stephen was killed traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, spreading the word among Jews.

But he was too wise for them, because the Holy Spirit gave him wisdom whenever he spoke.

You also have people who are following the teaching of the Nicolaitans.

But you do have this in your favor: You hate what the Nicolaitans are doing, just as I hate it.

Then the apostles, elders, and the whole church decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas Barsabbas and Silas, who were leaders among the believers.

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You travel by land and sea to win one person to your way of living, but then you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in languages they’d never learned. The Spirit gave them the ability to do this.

But other believers from Cyprus and Cyrene went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also. They told them the good news about the Lord Jesus.

When the church in Jerusalem heard about this, they sent Barnabas to Antioch.

When he found him, he brought him back with him to Antioch. For a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught large numbers of people. It was there at Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians.

In those days some prophets came down to Antioch from Jerusalem.

When Stephen was killed for telling other people about you, I stood there to show that I agreed he should die. I even guarded the coats of those who were killing him.’
