Paul knew that some of them were Sadducees and others were Pharisees. So he called out to the members of the Sanhedrin, “My brothers, I’m a Pharisee. I come from a family of Pharisees. I’m on trial because I believe that people will rise from the dead.”

The only thing I can think of that I might have done wrong was to shout out when I was on trial, ‘I believe that people will rise from the dead. That’s why I am on trial here today.’ ”

I have the same hope in God that these men have themselves. I believe that both good and bad people will rise from the dead.

I was circumcised on the eighth day. I’m part of the people of Israel. I’m from the tribe of Benjamin. I’m a pure Hebrew.

That same day the Sadducees, who don’t believe that people rise from the dead, came to Jesus with a question.

The high priest and the whole Council could tell you this themselves. I even asked them to write official letters to their friends in Damascus so I could go there and bring Jesus’ followers as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished.

“I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. So be as wise as snakes and as harmless as doves.

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to be baptized, John said to them, “You little snakes! Who warned you to try to escape the punishment that’s coming?

“I’m a Jew. I was born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but I grew up here in Jerusalem. I studied with Gamaliel, who trained me well in the law that was given to our people long ago. I wanted to honor God as much as any of you do.

The commander wanted to find out exactly what the Jews were accusing Paul of doing. So the next day he brought Paul out of prison and ordered the chief priests and all the members of the Sanhedrin to meet together. Then he led Paul in and had him stand in front of them.

Paul looked straight at the Sanhedrin. “My brothers,” he said, “I’ve always done my duty to God. To this day I feel that I have done nothing wrong.”

When he said this, the Pharisees and the Sadducees started to argue, and the Sanhedrin split into two different sides.

Now then, you and the Sanhedrin must ask the commander to bring Paul back to you. Pretend that you want more facts about his case. We’re ready to kill him before he gets here.”

Paul’s nephew answered, “Some Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul to the Sanhedrin tomorrow. They’re pretending they want more facts about him.

Your faith and love come from the hope that’s stored up for you in heaven. You’ve already heard about it in the true message of the good news

It’s like a firm and secure anchor for our souls. This hope leads all the way into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain,
