“I’m a Jew. I was born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but I grew up here in Jerusalem. I studied with Gamaliel, who trained me well in the law that was given to our people long ago. I wanted to honor God as much as any of you do.

They’ve known me for a long time, and they could tell you, if they wanted to, that I’ve lived by the rules of the Pharisees. Their rules are harder to obey than those of any other Jewish group.

The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street. Ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He’s been praying,

But a Pharisee named Gamaliel stood up in the Sanhedrin. He was a teacher of the law who was honored by all the people. He ordered the apostles to be taken outside

Paul answered, “I’m a Jew from Tarsus in Cilicia—a citizen of an important city. Please let me speak to the people.”

When they heard this, they praised God. But then they said to Paul, “Brother, you see that thousands of Jews have become believers. All of them try very hard to obey the law.

Are they Hebrews? So am I. Do they belong to the people of Israel? So do I. Are they Abraham’s children? So am I.

She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.

But let me ask, did God reject his people? Not at all! I myself belong to Israel. I am one of Abraham’s children, from the tribe of Benjamin.

Paul knew that some of them were Sadducees and others were Pharisees. So he called out to the members of the Sanhedrin, “My brothers, I’m a Pharisee. I come from a family of Pharisees. I’m on trial because I believe that people will rise from the dead.”

But members of a group called the Synagogue of the Freedmen began to oppose him. Some of them were Jews from Cyrene and Alexandria. Others were Jews from Cilicia and Asia. They all began to argue with Stephen.

Then I went to Syria and Cilicia.

I had studied Judaism in depth, more so than most Jews my age. That was because I was so devoted to the teachings passed down from those who’d lived before us.

The governor read the letter and asked Paul where he was from. When he learned that Paul was from Cilicia,

Paul first went through Syria and Cilicia to strengthen the churches there.

Here’s the letter they sent with them: From the apostles and elders, your brothers. To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia. Greetings.

Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul.

When the other believers found out about this, they took Saul down to Caesarea, and from there they sent him off to Tarsus.

The people came out to investigate. When they got to Jesus, they found the man from the town, now free of the demons, sitting at Jesus’ feet. He was dressed and thinking clearly. All this made the people afraid.

After three days they found him in the temple courtyard. He was sitting with the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

Meanwhile, Saul kept saying he was going to kill the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest

“I used to think I should do everything I could to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
