He came over to us, took Paul’s belt, and tied his own hands and feet with it. Then he said, “The Holy Spirit says, ‘This is how the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will tie up the owner of this belt. They will hand him over to the Gentiles.’ ”

The commander came up and arrested Paul. He ordered him to be held with two chains. Then he asked who Paul was and what he had done.

I only know that the Spirit has been warning me in every city that I will face prison and suffering.

The prophets were shown that they weren’t serving themselves. Instead, they were serving you when they spoke about the things that you’ve now heard from those who preached the good news to you with the help of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

You suffered along with people in prison, and when your property was taken from you, you accepted that with joy, because you knew that God had given you better and more lasting things.

The Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice,

and I’m suffering for it like a criminal in these chains. But God’s word isn’t being held back by chains.

Because of the good news, I’m being held in chains as the Lord’s messenger. So pray that I will preach the good news boldly, as I should.

As a prisoner of the Lord, I ask you to live a life worthy of the purposes God has chosen you to fulfill.

I, Paul, am in prison because of my work on behalf of you Gentiles. That’s how I’m serving Christ Jesus.

They disagreed with one another, and they began to leave after Paul made a final statement. He said, “The Holy Spirit was right when he said to your people long ago through Isaiah the prophet,

So I’ve asked to see you and talk with you. I am bound with this chain because I share Israel’s hope.”

Three days later Paul called a meeting of the local Jewish leaders. When they came, Paul said to them, “My brothers, I have done nothing against our people or the customs we’ve had since long ago. But I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans.

“Whether it takes a short time or a long time,” Paul replied, “I pray to God that you and everyone listening to me today may become like me—except for these chains!”

After two years passed, Porcius Festus became the governor instead of Felix. But Felix wanted to do the Jews a favor, so he left Paul in prison.

Another officer was standing there as they stretched Paul out to be whipped. Paul said to him, “Is it legal for you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?”

Paul and his group traveled all through the area of Phrygia and Galatia, looking for a place to stop and preach the word. But the Holy Spirit didn’t let them stop there, or farther west in the province of Asia, either.

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “I’ve appointed Barnabas and Saul for a special task. Set them apart for me.”

I will show him how much he must suffer for me.”

When Jesus had finished praying, he left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden. He and his disciples went into it.

The Holy Spirit told Philip, “Go over to that chariot and stay near it.”

We found some disciples there and stayed with them for seven days. Led by the Holy Spirit, they tried to keep Paul from going on to Jerusalem.

The Spirit clearly says that in later times some people will abandon the faith, follow deceptive spirits, and believe things that demons teach.
