But David was a prophet. He knew that God had made a promise to him that someone in his family line would be king after him.

It never came simply because a prophet wanted it to. Instead, the Holy Spirit guided the prophets as they spoke. Although the prophets were human, what they said came from God.

Remember Jesus Christ, who was raised from the dead, and who was from David’s family line. That’s the good news I preach,

His Son was born into the family line of King David,

David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, said, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your control.” ’

This is the name that’s written on the rider’s robe and on his thigh: King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

They’ll fight a war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will win the victory over them. That’s because he’s the most powerful Lord of all and the greatest King of all. His appointed, chosen, and faithful followers will be with him.”

But when Jesus became a priest, God confirmed this with an oath when he said to him, “The Lord has sworn an oath and he won’t change his mind. He has said, ‘You are a priest forever.’ ”

When God made his promise to Abraham and his family, he wanted them to know that he’d never change his mind.

So God chose another day, calling it “Today,” when he spoke through David a long time later, in the passage we’ve been considering: “Today, if you hear his voice, don’t be stubborn.”

The Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice,

And Isaiah says, “The Root of Jesse will grow up quickly. He will rule over the nations, and the Gentiles will put their hope in him.”

He said, “Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit spoke a long time ago through David about Judas Iscariot.

Jesus said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you. Everything that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must come true.”

When they had nailed him to the cross, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

He said to them, “Then why does David, speaking by the Spirit, call him ‘Lord’? David said,

In the past, God spoke to our people a little at a time in different ways through the prophets.
