Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on Sceva’s sons, overpowered them all, and gave them a terrible beating. They ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

The evil spirit was saying this because Jesus had commanded it to come out of the man. Many times it had taken hold of him, so that even though his hands and feet were chained and he was kept under guard, he was able to break his chains. Then the demon would force him to go out into lonely places in the countryside.

When they got to Jesus, they found the man who’d been controlled by many demons sitting there quietly. He was now dressed and thinking clearly. All this made the people afraid.

The people came out to investigate. When they got to Jesus, they found the man from the town, now free of the demons, sitting at Jesus’ feet. He was dressed and thinking clearly. All this made the people afraid.

He jumped to his feet and began to walk. He went with Peter and John into the temple courtyards, walking and leaping and praising God.

One day an evil spirit answered them, “I know Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?”

When the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus heard about this, they were all overcome with fear. It led them to hold the name of the Lord Jesus in high honor.

They promise to give them freedom, but they themselves are slaves to depravity. That’s because “people are slaves to anything that controls them.”
