Peter motioned with his hands for them to be quiet. Then he explained how the Lord had freed him from prison. “Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he went to a different place.

Before a group came representing James, Peter was eating with the Gentiles. But after they arrived, Peter pulled back and wouldn’t eat with them. He was afraid of those who wanted to require people to be circumcised.

James, Peter, and John, who are respected as pillars in the church, recognized that God had given me this privilege. So they shook hands with Barnabas and me to welcome us as partners. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles while they went to the Jews.

My dear brothers and sisters, pay attention to what I say: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

I didn’t see any of the other apostles. I only saw James, the Lord’s brother.

“Brothers and fathers,” Paul said, “listen to me now. I want to explain my actions.”

The next day Paul and the rest of us went to see James. All the elders were there.

Stephen replied, “Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still living near the Euphrates River, before he moved to Harran.

“Fellow Israelites, I assure you that King David died and was buried. His tomb is still here today.

“Fellow Israelites, listen to this! God showed his approval of the man Jesus of Nazareth by doing miracles, wonders, and signs among you through him. You all know this well.

Then Peter stood up with the 11 apostles and spoke to the crowd in a loud voice. “My fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem,” he said, “let me explain what’s happening. Listen carefully to what I say.

Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of the younger James and Joseph, and Salome.

Simon Peter has described for us how God chose some of the Gentiles to be among his very own people.
