He worked for the governor, Sergius Paulus. But the governor was an intelligent man, and he sent for Barnabas and Saul because wanted to hear God’s word.

Everyone said good things about him. They were amazed at the gracious words they heard from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.

Publius, the chief official on the island, owned some property nearby, and he welcomed us into his home. For three days he kindly took care of us.

There were about 12 men in all.

Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached the word of the Lord.

The word of the Lord spread through that whole area.

But he was too wise for them, because the Holy Spirit gave him wisdom whenever he spoke.

“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.

All the people were filled with wonder, and they praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us!” they said. “God has come to help his people.”

When the Roman commander and those who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and everything that had happened, they were terrified and exclaimed, “He had to be the Son of God!”

After Peter and John had preached the word of the Lord some more and told other people about Jesus, they returned to Jerusalem. On the way back they preached the good news in many villages in Samaria.

The evil magician, who was also called Elymas (meaning “Sorcerer”), opposed them and tried to keep the governor from becoming a believer.

When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord. All who were appointed for eternal life believed.

Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, “Let’s go back to all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord. Let’s visit the believers there and see how they are doing.”

But when Gallio became the governor of Achaia, the Jews of Corinth got together to oppose Paul. They brought him into court

This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.

In this way the word of the Lord spread everywhere and became more and more powerful.

If Demetrius and the other skilled workers think that someone has wronged them, they can bring charges. The courts are open, and we have judges available.
