We were comforted by his arrival, and also by the comfort you had given him. He told us how much you longed for me and about your deep sadness and great concern for me. That made me happier than ever.

Dear friends, I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share. But I felt that I had to write and urge you to stand up for the faith that God’s holy people have been trusted with once and for all time.

In the meantime, we groan because we want so much to put on our heavenly home.

It made me very happy to find some of your children living by the truth, just as the Father commanded us.

Elijah was a human being just as we are. He prayed hard that it wouldn’t rain, and it didn’t rain on the land for three and a half years.

So we must pay very careful attention to what we’ve heard, so that we don’t drift away from it.

Now we really live, because you’re standing firm in the Lord.

But just now Timothy has come to us from you, and he has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have happy memories of us and that you long to see us just as we long to see you.

Even though I’m away from you in body, I’m with you in spirit, and I am glad to see that you’re well-disciplined and that your faith in Christ is so strong.

I truly expect and hope that I won’t be ashamed in any way, but that I’ll be brave enough so that now as always, Christ will be honored in my body, whether I live or die.

Titus has the same concern for you that I do. I thank God for putting that in his heart.

I wrote to you the way I did to see if you would pass the test and obey everything I asked you to do.

Up to this point you’ve only understood some of the things we’ve said. But I hope you’ll come to understand us completely. Then you’ll realize that you can be just as proud of us as we will be of you on the day when the Lord Jesus returns.

I want us to encourage one another in the faith that we share.

Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith. When he arrived and saw what God’s grace had done, he was very happy. He told them all to remain true to the Lord with their whole hearts. Even more people came to know the Lord.

Because he was so distressed, he prayed even harder, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.

Peter remembered that Jesus had said, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” Peter went outside and wept bitterly.

Blessed are those who mourn, because they will be comforted.

And you’re proud of this! Shouldn’t you be grieving instead? Shouldn’t you have thrown this man out from among you?

He’s the God who gives all comfort, comforting us in all our troubles. As a result, we can comfort others when they’re in trouble, using the comfort that we’ve received from God.

But God, who comforts those who are discouraged, comforted us by sending Titus.

Even if my letter upset you, I’m not sorry that I sent it. At first I was sorry, because I see that my letter hurt you, though only for a little while.
