I’ve spoken to you very honestly. I’m very proud of you. I’m truly encouraged; even with all of our troubles, I’m overflowing with joy.

He’s the God who gives all comfort, comforting us in all our troubles. As a result, we can comfort others when they’re in trouble, using the comfort that we’ve received from God.

Since we have that kind of hope, we are very bold.

My brothers and sisters, think of it as pure joy when you face all kinds of trouble.

I’m joyful because of what I’m suffering for you. My suffering continues the sufferings of Christ for his body, which is the church.

But even if my life is going to be poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I’ll be glad and joyful with all of you.

I always thank my God for you because of the grace he has given you in Christ Jesus.

After all, what is our hope? What is our joy? What is the crown that we will delight in when our Lord Jesus returns? Isn’t it you?

Earlier, in the city of Philippi, we suffered and the people treated us very badly, as you also know. But God still gave us the boldness to tell you his good news, even when people strongly opposed us.

I truly expect and hope that I won’t be ashamed in any way, but that I’ll be brave enough so that now as always, Christ will be honored in my body, whether I live or die.

I’m ashamed to say that I was too weak for that! Whatever anyone else dares to brag about— I’m speaking like a fool—I also dare to brag about.

So show them and all the churches how much you love others and why we’re so proud of you.

But thanks be to God, who always leads us as if we were prisoners in Christ’s victory parade. He uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere like perfume.

Up to this point you’ve only understood some of the things we’ve said. But I hope you’ll come to understand us completely. Then you’ll realize that you can be just as proud of us as we will be of you on the day when the Lord Jesus returns.

We’re full of joy because we expect to share in God’s glory. And that’s not all. We’re full of joy even when we suffer.

The apostles were full of joy as they left the Sanhedrin. They considered it an honor to suffer shame for the name of Jesus.

I had bragged about you to him, and you haven’t let me down. Everything we said to you was true, and in the same way, everything we told Titus about you has also turned out to be true.

So even if I brag too much about the authority the Lord has given me to build you up, not to tear you down, I’m not ashamed of that kind of bragging.

Because I’m a prisoner, most of the brothers and sisters have become much bolder in the Lord, and they’re not afraid to preach the good news.

I’m confident that I’ll be able to come see you again, and then you’ll be able to boast in Christ Jesus even more because of me.

We’ve been bragging to the rest of God’s churches about your endurance and faith in all the suffering and testing you’re going through.

Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, my brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.
