When they heard this, they didn’t question or criticize Peter any longer. Instead, they praised God and said, “So then, God has allowed even Gentiles to turn away from their sins and find life!”
“But the tax collector stood off by himself and wouldn’t even look up to heaven. He struck his chest in remorse and prayed, ‘God, have mercy on me. I’m a sinner.’
As you know, afterwards he wanted to receive his father’s blessing, but he was turned away. Even though he pleaded with tears, he still couldn’t change what he had done.
I’m afraid that when I come my God will humble me before you. I’ll be grieved about many who have sinned earlier and who haven’t turned away from the impurity, sexual sin, and wild living that they’ve gotten involved in.
But now I’m happy, not because I made you sad, but because your sadness led you to turn away from your sins. You felt sad the right way as God intended, so we didn’t hurt you in any way.
