The Law was written in letters on stone. Though it was a way of serving God, it led to death. But that way of serving God was surrounded by glory when it was introduced. The glory lasted for only a short time, but even so, the people of Israel couldn’t look at Moses’ face for very long because of it.

But when what is complete arrives, the things that are not complete will disappear.

Christ has fulfilled everything the law was meant to do, so now there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

He has given us the power to serve under a new covenant. It’s not based on the written Law of Moses; it comes from the Holy Spirit. The written Law kills, but the Spirit gives life.

It’s clear that you’re a letter from Christ, the result of our work for God, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God. You’re a letter not written on tablets of stone but on human hearts.

I found that the commandment that was supposed to bring life brought death.

It had the golden altar for incense and the wooden chest called the ark of the covenant. The ark was covered with gold. It held the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s walking stick that had budded, and the stone tablets that had the words of the covenant written on them.

When the law was introduced, sin got worse, because now people were doing things that they knew were wrong. But when sin got worse, God poured out an even greater abundance of grace.

The power of sin used to control us. The law told us we couldn’t do certain things, but that only made us want to do them more. So our lives produced only death.

Wouldn’t the work of the Holy Spirit be even more glorious?

All who rely on obeying the law are under a curse. It is written, “Cursed is everyone who doesn’t continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”

So is the law opposed to God’s promises? Certainly not! If a law had been given that could give life, then people could become right with God by obeying that law.

But Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the person who builds a house is honored more than the house itself.

You haven’t come to a mountain that could be touched and that’s burning with fire. You haven’t come to darkness, gloom, and storm,
