We’ll be ready to punish anyone who still tries to disobey once the whole church has chosen to obey.

I’m confident that you will obey, and so I’m writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask.

But you know that Timothy has proved himself. He has served with me like a son with his father in spreading the good news.

Take special note of anyone who doesn’t obey the teachings in our letter and then don’t have anything to do with them. Then they’ll feel ashamed.

And so, my dear friends, as you’ve always obeyed God—not just while I was with you, but even more now that I’m not with you— continue to work out your own salvation. Do it with fear and trembling.

So show them and all the churches how much you love others and why we’re so proud of you.

I wrote the way I did so that when I came, you wouldn’t make me sad when you’re supposed to make me happy. I was sure that you would all want the same things I wanted.

I wrote to you in great distress, with a heavy heart, and with my eyes full of tears. I wasn’t trying to upset you. I just wanted you to know how deeply I love you.

I’m asking you to let him know that you still love him.

They were going through a great trial, but they were still overflowing with joy, so that even though they were very poor, they gave generously.
