I’m afraid that when I come I won’t find you as I want you to be, and you won’t find me as you want me to be. I’m afraid that there will be arguing, jealousy, fits of anger, selfish ambition, insults, gossip, arrogance, and disorder.

So get rid of all hatred, deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and insults of every kind.

But if you say or do things that harm one another, watch out! You could end up destroying one another.

My brothers and sisters, I say this because some people from Chloe’s family have told me that you’re arguing with one another.

They did things that shouldn’t be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, fighting, deception, and bad motives.

These people follow their own evil desires. They grumble and complain about others, but they brag about themselves and praise others to get what they want.

They speak empty, bragging words. By appealing to lust and desire, they tempt new believers who are just escaping from others who are living wrong.

Let’s not become proud or make each other angry or want what belongs to someone else.

I’m afraid that when I come my God will humble me before you. I’ll be grieved about many who have sinned earlier and who haven’t turned away from the impurity, sexual sin, and wild living that they’ve gotten involved in.

I already warned you during my second visit, and I’ll say it again now while I’m away: When I return, I won’t spare those who sinned earlier. I won’t spare any of the others, either,

We’ll be ready to punish anyone who still tries to disobey once the whole church has chosen to obey.

When I come to see you, please don’t make me be as severe as I expect I’ll need to be toward some people who think I live in the same way as the people of this world.

But, as you know, I didn’t come to Corinth on my way to Macedonia. I stayed away because I wanted to spare you. (God is my witness that this was the reason—may he take my life if I’m lying!)

God is not a God of disorder; he’s a God of peace, as in all the churches of the Lord’s people.

They gossip and lie about other people, and they hate God. They’re rude and arrogant. They brag about themselves. They keep thinking of new ways to do wrong. They don’t honor their parents.

But God will pour out his great anger on the ones who only look out for themselves, who don’t accept the truth, and who do wrong.

And you’re proud of this! Shouldn’t you be grieving instead? Shouldn’t you have thrown this man out from among you?

But I made up my mind not to have another painful visit with you.

My brothers and sisters, don’t say bad things about one another. Anyone who says something bad about a brother or sister is saying it about the law, and anyone who judges another believer is judging the law. When you judge the law, you’re not keeping it, you’re acting as if you were its judge.
