Now I’m ready to visit you for the third time. I’m not going to be a burden to you, because I don’t want what you have. What I really want is you. After all, children shouldn’t have to save up for their parents. Parents should save up for their children.

Follow my example. I try to please everyone in every way. I’m not looking out for what’s good for me. I’m looking out for the interests of others, so that they might be saved.

No one should look out only for their own interests. Instead, they should look out for the interests of others.

Because I was sure of this, I wanted to visit you before I went to Macedonia so that we could see each other twice.

You know that we treated each of you the way a father treats his own children.

I wasn’t greedy for anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.

We loved you so much that we were happy to share with you not just God’s good news, but our own lives as well.

It’s not that I want your gifts. I want greater and greater rewards to be stored up for you.

My brothers and sisters, stand firm in the Lord in this way. I love you and miss you, dear friends. You’re my joy and my crown.

After I go through Macedonia, I’ll come and see you, since I’ll only be passing through Macedonia.

Anyone who’s hungry should eat something at home first. That way, when you meet together, you won’t be judged. When I come, I’ll give you more directions.

But I am going to come very soon, if that’s the Lord’s will. Then I’ll find out if there’s actually any power behind what these proud people are saying.

If others have the right to receive support from you, don’t we have an even greater right? But we haven’t used that right. No, we’re prepared to make any sacrifice we have to, rather than let anything get in the way of the good news of Christ.

So what reward do I get? Here’s my reward: being able to offer the good news free of charge, without claiming all my rights as a person who preaches the good news.

I’m free and I don’t belong to anyone, but I’ve made myself a slave to everyone. I’ve done that to win as many people as I can to Christ.

When I was with you and needed something, I didn’t make you pay for it. The believers who came from Macedonia provided everything I needed. I haven’t made you pay for anything at all, and I won’t ever do that.

How did I treat you worse than any of the other churches? The only difference was that I didn’t make you pay for anything. Forgive me for that wrong!

My dear children, once again I’m in pain for you, as if I were a woman giving birth. That’s how much I want to see Christ make you like himself.
