Brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the difficulties we went through in the province of Asia. We were in great distress—far more than we could stand. We even thought we were going to die.

If I fought wild animals in Ephesus with nothing more than human hopes, then what did I gain by that? If the dead aren’t raised, “Let us eat and drink, because tomorrow we’ll die.”

You think you already have everything you need. You think you’ve already become rich and that you’ve begun to rule, even though we haven’t. I wish that you really had begun to rule. Then we’d be ruling with you!

A door has opened wide for me to do some good work here, even though there are also many people who oppose me.

Some of us are Parthians, Medes, or Elamites. Others come from near the Euphrates River, or from Judea or Cappadocia. Some are from Pontus, Asia,

Paul and his group traveled all through the area of Phrygia and Galatia, looking for a place to stop and preach the word. But the Holy Spirit didn’t let them stop there, or farther west in the province of Asia, either.

Brothers and sisters, I want you to know that I’ve planned many times to visit you. But until now, I’ve been kept from coming. My work has produced results among the other Gentiles, and in the same way, I want to see results among you.

In fact, we felt as if we’d actually been sentenced of death. But that happened so that we wouldn’t depend on ourselves, but on God who raises the dead to life.

We’re well known, but people treat us as if we were unknown. We’re dying, but we continue to live. We’re beaten, but we’re not killed.

This convinced all the people to leave and go home.
