Because a church leader takes care of God’s family, he must be blameless. He must not push people around, or get angry easily, or get drunk, or try to get money by cheating people.
Keep watch over yourselves and all the believers that the Holy Spirit has made you leaders over. Be shepherds of God’s church, which he bought with his own blood.
Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care. Watch over them, not because you have to, but because you want to. That’s what God wants you to do. Don’t do it to try to get money in dishonest ways, but because you really want to serve.
Make sure that no one misses out on God’s grace and that no bitter plant grows up, because if it does, it will cause trouble and make many people impure.
This is a saying you can trust. I want you to emphasize these things so that those who trust in God will be careful to commit themselves to doing good. These things are excellent and good for everyone.
Peter continued, “Here’s what the Scriptures say in the Book of Psalms: “ ‘May his home be deserted, may no one live in it.’ The Psalms also say, “ ‘Let someone else take his place as leader.’
If you suffer, it shouldn’t be because you’re a murderer or a thief or any other kind of criminal. It shouldn’t be because you interfere in other people’s business.
And we urge you, brothers and sisters, to warn certain people who don’t want to work and who are being disruptive. Encourage those who have lost hope, help those who are weak, and be patient with everyone.
