Rejoice and be glad, because you have a great reward in heaven. You’re being treated just the way people treated the prophets who lived long ago.

Was there ever a prophet your people didn’t attack? They even killed those who told about the coming of the Blameless One. And now you’ve handed him over to his enemies and murdered him.

Long ago God planned that Jesus would be handed over to you. With the help of those who didn’t know God’s law, and under the plan God spoke long ago, you put him to death by nailing him to a cross.

You killed the author of life—but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of that.

The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they nailed him to a cross,

All the people answered, “Put the blame for his death on us and our children!”

“Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and throw stones at those who are sent to you. Many times I’ve wanted to gather your people together the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you wouldn’t let me!

But God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered in the desert.

When Herod saw that this pleased the church’s Jewish opponents, he arrested Peter as well. He did this during the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead, even though you killed him by nailing him to a cross.

Then listen, you and all the people of Israel! It is through the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth that this man stands healed in front of you. You nailed Jesus to the cross, but God raised him from the dead.

I’ve had to keep on the move constantly. I’ve been in danger from rivers, in danger from robbers, in danger from my fellow Jews, and in danger from Gentiles. I’ve been in danger in the city, in the country, and at sea. I’ve been in danger from people who pretended they were believers.
