Some of you are saying, “I have the right to do anything.” That may be true, but not everything is helpful. If you say, “I have the right to do anything,” you should also say, “But I won’t be controlled by anything.”

No, I train my body and bring it under control, so that after I’ve preached to others, I won’t be disqualified myself.

We earned our own living, even though we had the right to receive help from you, in order to set an example for you to follow.

These ungodly people are like stains at the meals you share. They’re shepherds who shamelessly feed only themselves. They’re like clouds without rain, blown along by the wind. They’re like trees that haven’t produced any fruit by the fall and are pulled out of the ground. That makes them dead in two ways.

So then, here’s what I say about eating food sacrificed to idols. We know that “an idol really is nothing at all in the world.” We know that “there is only one God.”

We know that the law is spiritual. But I am unspiritual. I have been sold as a slave to sin.

If others have the right to receive support from you, don’t we have an even greater right? But we haven’t used that right. No, we’re prepared to make any sacrifice we have to, rather than let anything get in the way of the good news of Christ.

so the Jewish leaders said to the man who’d been healed, “It’s the Sabbath day. The law doesn’t allow you to carry your mat today.”
