It feels as if God has put us apostles on display like the people who are put at the end of the procession to the arena because they’re going to die there. And it feels as if the whole universe is watching, both angels and humans.

Sometimes people spoke badly about you in front of others. Sometimes you were mistreated. At other times you stood side by side with people who were being treated like that.

It is written, “Because of you, we face death all day long. We’re regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

Aren’t all the angels spirits that God sends to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Some were insulted and whipped; some were held in chains and put in prison.

We didn’t want anyone’s faith to be shaken by these times of testing, which you know very well will happen to us.

We’re well known, but people treat us as if we were unknown. We’re dying, but we continue to live. We’re beaten, but we’re not killed.

Paul had some friends who were officials in the province, and they also sent him a message begging him not to go into the hall.

Soon the whole city was upset. The people dragged Gaius and Aristarchus, two men who’d come with Paul from Macedonia, into the assembly hall.

If we have hope in Christ only for this life, then people should pity us more than anyone else.

Are they serving Christ? I’m serving him even more. (I’m out of my mind to talk like this!) I’ve worked much harder. I’ve been in prison more often. I’ve suffered terrible beatings. Again and again I’ve almost died.
