I’d like all of you to speak in unknown languages, but I’d rather have you prophesy. The person who prophesies is more helpful than the one who speaks in an unknown language, unless someone explains what they’re saying; then the whole church can be built up.

To another he gives the power to do miracles, or to prophesy, or to tell spirits apart, or to speak in different kinds of languages they hadn’t known before. And to still others he gives the ability to explain what was said in those languages.

If I speak in the languages of human beings or even of angels, but I don’t have love, I’m only a loud gong or a noisy cymbal.

Those who believe will do miraculous signs. They’ll drive out demons in my name, and they’ll speak in new tongues.

So follow the way of love, and be eager to have the gifts of the Spirit. Most of all, you should want the gift of prophecy.

Love is patient and kind. It doesn’t want what belongs to other people. It doesn’t brag, it isn’t proud,

So let’s do all we can to live in peace, and let’s work hard to build one another up.

You might be giving thanks, but no one else is being built up.
