Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where are the great thinkers of our time? Hasn’t God made the wisdom of the world foolish?

They claimed to be wise, but they turned into fools.

The wisdom of this world is foolish in God’s eyes. It is written, “God catches wise people in their own clever plans.”

It is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of those who are wise. I will do away with the cleverness of those who think they’re so smart.”

However, when we speak to those who are mature in the faith, we do share our wisdom. But it’s not the wisdom of this world or its rulers, who are fading away.

The seed that fell among the thorns stands for those who hear the message but then have it crowded out by the worries of this life and the false promises of wealth, which keep it from producing fruit.

Now is the time for the world to be judged and for the prince of this world to be thrown out.

A group of Epicurean and Stoic thinkers began to argue with him. Some of them asked, “What is this person blabbing on about?” Others said, “He seems to be talking about gods we’ve never heard of.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and saying that he’d risen from the dead.

Ever since the world was created, the invisible qualities of God have been visible in everything he has made. Those qualities are his eternal power and his nature as God. So people have no excuse for what they do.

Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when God called you. Not many of you were considered wise by human standards. Not many of you were influential. Not many of you came from important families.

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise. God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

God chose the things of this world that are common, and which are looked down on as if they were nothing, in order to discredit the things that are considered significant.

None of the rulers of this world understood God’s wisdom. If they had, they wouldn’t have nailed the Lord of glory to the cross.

Don’t fool yourselves. If any of you think you’re wise by the standards of the world, you should become “fools” so that you can become truly wise.

Don’t you know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? Since you’re going to do that, don’t you think you can judge small cases?

Still, when the Lord judges us in this way, he’s correcting us so that we won’t be judged in the end along with the rest of the world.

You unfaithful people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Anyone who chooses to be the world’s friend becomes God’s enemy.
