I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,

to understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles.

Then I said, “Ah Lord God! They are saying of me, ‘Is he not a maker of allegories?’ ”

At the end of their rule, when the transgressions have reached their full measure, a king of bold countenance shall arise, skilled in intrigue.

With him I speak face to face—clearly, not in riddles, and he beholds the form of the Lord. “Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”

Then Balaam uttered his oracle, saying, “Balak has brought me from Aram, the king of Moab from the eastern mountains: ‘Come, curse Jacob for me. Come, denounce Israel!’

This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet: “I will open my mouth to speak in parables; I will proclaim what has been hidden since the foundation.”

Therefore whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed from the housetops.

Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with complete frankness,
