Those who denounce friends for reward— the eyes of their children will fail.

They utter lies to each other; with flattering lips and a deceitful heart they speak.

For they flatter themselves in their own eyes that their iniquity cannot be found out and hated.

For there is no truth in their mouths; their hearts are destruction; their throats are open graves; they flatter with their tongues.

For in vain is the net baited while the bird is looking on;

A gossip reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a babbler.

A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin.

Whoever rebukes a person will afterward find more favor than one who flatters with the tongue.

With much seductive speech she persuades him; with her smooth talk she compels him.

that they may keep you from the loose woman, from the adulteress with her smooth words.

For such people do not serve our Lord Christ but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded.

As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed,

So Saul’s servants reported these words to David in private. And David said, “Does it seem to you a little thing to become the king’s son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man and of no repute?”
