What do you think? If a shepherd has a hundred sheep and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray?

Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,

I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek out your servant, for I do not forget your commandments.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

My people have been lost sheep; their shepherds have led them astray, turning them away on the mountains; from mountain to hill they have gone, they have forgotten their fold.

As shepherds sort out their flocks when they are among scattered sheep, so I will sort out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness.

I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strays, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice.

They shall no more be plunder for the nations, nor shall the animals of the land devour them; they shall live in safety, and no one shall make them afraid.

You have not strengthened the weak; you have not healed the sick; you have not bound up the injured; you have not brought back the strays; you have not sought the lost, but with force and harshness you have ruled them.

My sheep were scattered; they wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill; my sheep were scattered over all the face of the earth, with no one to search or seek for them.

He said to them, “Suppose one of you has only one sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath; will you not lay hold of it and lift it out?

And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.

“What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’

“What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.”

I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.

For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.
